Breaking Bad vs Dexter: 4 Ways Dexter Lost To Walter White

2. Insignificant Character Deaths

Dexter Cty Though there were several deaths in the final season, the most notable being Dr. Vogel and Debra, the majority of them were entirely new characters who had just been introduced, allowing very little emotional investment in them. Wouldn't it have been wiser, being the final season, to raise the stakes by killing a long standing character to emphasize no one was safe? Or not even someone who had been around since the beginning, such as Jamie?. I had thought for sure she would end up a victim of the Brain Surgeon instead of Dexter's friendly neighbour. Though Breaking Bad's body count may have been fairly low in the final season its two significant deaths were undoubtedly Hank and Gomie. Those two were around from the very beginning and while Gomez was a supporting character who didn't get much backstory throughout the series, he was always recognized as Hank's faithful partner and friend. Hank, of course, was the show's real hero and his death hit hard for the characters and fans alike. Since so many of the deaths in Dexter were newly introduced characters the final season failed to provide a ripple effect the way Hank's did. Jamie's death could have done that as she was connected to Dexter, Batista, Quinn, Harrison and even Debra, but they chose instead to pick off Zack Hamilton, Dexter's neighbour and Dr. Vogel, three characters who had very little relation to any of the larger cast. Hank's death not only hit the entire White family, but was the catalyst for the show's final events. It satisfied and broke fans' hearts in a way Dexter did not come close to.
