4. Steve Connelly
Steve Connelly slipped on to our screens while supposedly rigging the police station with a better communication system following the murder. Played by Will Mellor, the character was always going to be more than a passing electrician, and so it proved when he declared to DI Hardy and DS Miller that he was a psychic and Danny was talking to him from beyond the grave. Initially dismissed by Hardy as a weirdo craving attention, Connelly's 'information' that Danny was killed in a boat started to look a little too accurate for comfort. Beth would later turn to Connelly in desperation to find the killer, before Hardy put a stop to it, something Connelly did not take kindly too. It seemed at this point that the 'psychic' had played his part in the enquiry, but then in episode seven it was DI Hardy's turn to seek his help, asking for any information he might have. His brief appearance could have been a subtle suggestion that Connelly was yet to play a bigger role in the mystery. Is he psychic? Is he just someone so desperate for attention he would insert himself into the bereaved family home? Or could it be that Connelly is the killer, and has returned to the scene of the crime to torment his victim's family and distract the police?
Did he kill Danny? There is little hard evidence to suggest Connelly played a part in Danny's death, but if he is not psychic, how did he know about the boat? And why is he so desperate to talk to Beth and the family? There is no clear motive, but if Connelly genuinely thinks he can talk to the dead, who knows what the voices in his head might have told him to do. In the world of TV thrillers though, Connelly just seems too obviously weird to have been the killer.
