Broadchurch Finale: 12 Questions That Still Need Answering

10. Why On Earth Did Lee Even Come Back?

So, if Claire was playing the grand manipulator and keeping close to Hardy in the hope that he wouldn't notice that she was guilty, she should probably have passed this key information on, rather than inciting him to come to Broadchurch to draw more attention to them. Hardy was struggling to come up with anything in the case until Lee re-appeared, and the philandering killer seems to have come from the same brainless school of thought as his wife in basically drawing attention to himself. If he hadn't implicated Ricky with his own "evidence", Ellie might never have got the pieces together. He'd have been better staying in France. Did Claire just want her husband to come back for a bit of angry sex? If she was so resolute in getting him convicted, why not just confess from the start: she can't have reasonably thought his prosecution wouldn't have seen her wind up locked up as well.
