If our favourite sci-fi, fantasy and horror shows have taught us anything, it's that monsters come in all shapes and sizes. Gone are the days when they would simply lurk under the bed, waiting for a stray toe to appear so they could sink their ten rows of teeth into it; now they our steal voices and possess our friends, and sometimes even fall from heaven or space.

But Buffy, Sam, Dean, Mulder and Scully always seem to be there to uncover their secrets, stake the fiends and send the demons straight back to hell, leaving no mystery unexamined, no dark corner unexplored. Hundreds of different monsters have come their way throughout a cumulative 33 seasons of television, and they have lived to tell the tale. Well, mostly.

Aided by a slick mix of practical and computer-generated effects, the three series have racked up an extensive rogues gallery of creatures whose aesthetic similarity could make for a compelling shared universe. But only the most serious of fans will remember them all.

Do you know your wendigos from your werewolves, your djinn from your Jersey devils? And do you know which show they belong to?
