Alexander Harris was always an unlikely hero - no powers, no leather trench coat, no destiny, no problem rubbing everyone up the wrong way. But, ever since his fateful befriending of Buffy Summers, Sunnydale's one (or two, or three, or several hundred) and only vampire slayer, he stumbled, bumbled and laughed his way into danger's gaping maw.
From humble beginnings, with an alcoholic family and a basement pad, Xander rose to become the literal saviour of the world and one hell of a handy carpenter, almost marrying everyone's favourite vengeance demon along the way. With a string of demonic relationships and unlucky in love storylines, he was certainly never short of a spot of romantic doom.
Played with relish by Nicholas Brendon, Xander may have got on the nerves of many viewers but, time and again, he was the heart of the group - and the comic relief. Across seven seasons (and a further five in the comics), he provided the perfect counterpoint to Giles' stuffiness, Angel's moody angst and the unquantifiable otherworldly evil that the Scooby Gang faced on a weekly basis.
