11. The Secret Pregnant Woman Subplot
In the late season two episode "Applied Anthropology and Culinary Arts," Shirley (Yvette Nicole Brown) goes into labour, and Abed casually mentions that he helped deliver a baby earlier in the year while everyone else was "off in the background."
This is the ingenious payoff to an incredible running gag throughout prior episodes.
Earlier in season two ("The Psychology of Letting Go"), Abed has a subplot which takes place entirely in the background as he meets a pregnant woman, argues with the father of the child, and is later seen helping deliver the baby in the back of a pickup truck.
But the setup for the gag goes back even further than that: in season one's "The Politics of Human Sexuality," Dean Pelton discovers his branded condoms are defective and warns the students not to use them.
This prompts the eventual father of the child to throw the condom away in the background while canoodling with his soon-to-be-pregnant girlfriend. Incredible.
