We've already mentioned how The Death of Superman scene could be interpreted as a nod to Batman v Superman, but that same installment of Crisis had a more direct reference to it. Not only did Earth-99's hardened Bruce bare a few similarities to the grim outlook of Ben Affleck's Caped Crusader in the 2016 film, he managed to kill Superman (the same M.O. of Batfleck) and even quoted one of the film's most infamous lines: "My parents taught me a very different lesson. Life only makes sense if you force it to."

On that note, the line was originally inspired by Frank Miller's legendary 1986 graphic novel The Dark Knight Returns in which another broken version of Bruce uses his hopeless outlook on life as an excuse to stop Superman.
