7. Karen's Troubled Past

Episode ten is an almost entirely Karen-centric episode detailing her tragic back story, and it clearly has its roots in her controversial Born Again origin story.

Thankfully the series' adaptation of it omits some of the more problematic elements, namely that Karen becomes a drug-addicted prostitute and porn actress who ends up selling Matt's identity for drugs. Nice.

The substance abuse aspect certainly isn't shied away from, though, with Karen even dropping a line about giving blowjobs for drugs, and of course, the eventual result of her behaviour is the death of her brother Kevin (Jack DiFalco) in a car accident.

The show did a fine job of towing the line, by incorporating Karen's depressing history without getting too grubby or discomfortingly over-the-top.
