DC Vs Marvel: Who Is Winning The Superhero TV War?
8. The Animated Years: X-Men Or Batman: The Animated Series?
Of could it would be remiss not to look at the many animated shows that adapted Marvel and DC superheroes for TV. The beauty of a good superhero cartoon is that budget is no issue and indeed audiences have witnessed some pretty epic storylines translated to the TV screen. The 90's were perhaps the golden age for animated superhero television with X Men, Batman: The Animated Series and Spider-Man proving to be definite Saturday morning viewing for kids - young and old. If DC has proven to be the most consistent with live action TV shows over the years, then perhaps Marvel have had the edge on the animated front. Spider-Man, Spider Woman, Iron Man, Fantastic Four and various incarnations of the X Men have appeared in animated form over the years, leading up to modern classics like Marvel's Ultimate Spider-Man, Avengers and Hulk and the Agents Of Smash. Add in dramatic retellings of storylines like the Phoenix saga and Marvel has served animated television well. On the DC front, it isn't quite as spectacular. Batman: The Animated Series might be one of the finest superhero TV shows of all time - live action included - but other attempts haven't gained quite the appeal of the Marvel counterparts. Teen Titans and Batman Beyond tried something new, while some of the attempts at the Justice League were a bit bland and the less said about Krypto the Superdog the better. If DC ruled live action superhero TV shows then Marvel have consistently won the battle when it comes to their animated counterparts.
