Two shows separated by a decade and a half, yet both of them aimed for a collective goal - to make science and aliens funny.

Whilst they both succeeded enormously, Futurama and Rick and Morty both went about this feat in starkly differing ways. Where Futurama imagined what life would be like in the year 3000, put through the lens of a man from the year 2000, Rick and Morty imagined a wide and expansive multiverse in which every possible reality was housed, as well as the creatures to be found in the wider universe.

The tones of the shows were drastically apart too. Futurama was always a jolly, gallant look at the 20th century's thoughts on the year 3000 - featuring an alcoholic robot and a one-eyed starship captain. Rick and Morty on the other hand has been described as a show made entirely through the lens of nihilism. Nothing in Rick and Morty ever makes Rick grow as a person, whilst Morty's moral values are frequently challenged.

However, it would be foolish to say that these shows don't share some similarities. They have both been capable of producing visceral, heartfelt moments of emotional heft - as well as showing a sense of family and the importance of it.
