Apparently, Steven Moffat asked for the Doctor's daughter, Jenny, not to die in the episode of the same name. Many guessed that he wanted to introduce her in his era, maybe even give her a spin-off, but others suspect he wanted to lessen the impact of her death, so that River's in the following story, 'Silence in the Library'/'Forest of the Dead' would be more sombre. It's a horribly sad moment when River dies, especially after watching all her adventures with Eleven. She cries, telling Ten that those times can't be rewritten, and then shushes him, whispering goodbye with the word, "Spoilers". If it doesn't force a tear from you, the exchange of looks between the Doctor and CAL as he uploads River to the mainframe, will surely move you. River died the first time we saw her, so how on Earth could Moffat ever end her story? 'The Name of the Doctor' was a fitting close, surely, and it's just as affecting when the Doctor tells River that he loves her, and that he doesn't know how to say goodbye. It's one of the most bizarre relationships television has ever known, but there's no denying it's one capable of moving its audience.
