The Classic Doctors weren't nearly as emotional as these new guys, and the Third Doctor is perhaps the very essence of this; a no-nonsense, suave but spritely older gentleman, he was far too busy protecting Earth to ever get in touch with his more sentimental side. When he regenerated though, it was one of the saddest moments in the show's history. The Doctor's been missing for three weeks before he returns and collapses to the floor; Sarah Jane makes him comfortable, asking him not to die. This Doctor's typically brave in the face of death though; "A tear, Sarah Jane?" he asks, before assuring her, "Don't cry. While there's life there's..." He never reaches the end of his sentence though. The Pertwee era ends in the balance, as the Brigadier and Sarah Jane mourn the third incarnation of the man. Jon Pertwee was so many people's favourite Doctor, and left a huge legacy on the show. His departure remains one of the biggest moments of the show's history, and it still sends a chill down the spine of many.
