Doctor Who: Is Peter Capaldi Playing The First Doctor?

3. Behind the Scenes

Doctorwho Actionfigure There seems to be an odd amount of secrecy behind the Twelfth Doctor compared to the debut of previous Doctors. At time of writing, filming for the eighth series has been going on for three weeks but the most we've seen of Capaldi on-set is a night-time horseride wearing what appears to be a nightgown. Even his action figure, which appeared at the London Toy Fair in late January, shows him still sporting the togs of his predecessor (sans bow tie). Why the hush around his wardrobe? The Twelfth Doctor's first episode will take place in Victorian London alongside the Paternoster Gang, who will presumably help him recover from his regeneration. If he picks a new outfit whilst on the move, and his personality has been reverted to that of the First Doctor, he might be drawn to adopting a Victorian-era garb reminiscent of his first incarnation's Edwardian look. Steven Moffat has indicated that there will be an explanation why Twelve looks identical to a man the Doctor once saved from Ancient Pompeii and why a supposedly brand-new body already has wrinkles. They might incorporate John Frobisher into the explanation, though Torchwood continuity in the Whoniverse got a little jumbled towards the end. In true Moffat timey-wimey form, maybe something the Twelfth Doctor does during his tenure will imprint his face across time resulting in Caecilius and Frobisher growing into that appearance, a bit like Gwen Cooper. However, this can still be the face of a younger-looking First Doctor. As for the wrinkles, maybe the Eleventh Doctor's advanced age when he regenerated rubbed off on his successor, though if Ten could regenerate hair gel I don't see a problem with age-lines.
