Doctor Who: 10 Final Candidates For The 12th Doctor

6. Daniel Rigby

Daniel Rigby For those of you reading this on British shores, you might recognise Daniel Rigby as the student in the BT adverts, or the main character of one of Charlie Brooker€™s Black Mirror episodes about Waldo the foul-mouthed political bear (yeah, you read that correctly). For those of you reading this any place else, you€™ll possibly have no clue who this guy is, unless you€™re a big fan of Morecambe and Wise. This is because Rigby€™s most famous role was in the Victoria Wood-penned Eric and Ernie, chronicling the formative years of the seemingly forever middle-aged duo. He absolutely killed in the part of Eric Morecambe, able to wring pathos out of situation one moment before clowning around in an avuncular style the next. Such character beats are vital in the Doctor, who, let€™s not forget, is first and foremost a children€™s TV character. This role could also function as Rigby€™s second big break €“ his tour-de-force as Morecambe saw him beat out the exalted company of both Benedict Cumberbatch€™s Sherlock and Smith€™s Doctor for the BAFTA Best Actor gong, but it can be argued that his career hasn€™t caught fire as it should€™ve done afterwards. A role of the Doctor€™s status could provide this man with a platform to showcase his talents, because let€™s face it, you don€™t win a BAFTA unless you€™re very, very good.
