Downton Abbey: 5 Key Sub-Plots For Season 4

2. Carson And Mrs Hughes' Sexual Tension

Dowton Abbey Carson Hughes The relationship between Carson and Mrs. Hughes has always been interesting. Their differing opinions on the changing world around them and the family they work for and live with presents a fascinating contrast. While Carson appears stoic and often cold hearted, the revelations in last week's episode (Season 4, Episode 2) regarding his old friend reminded us that he had a life before he worked for the Granthams; a life where the woman he once loved died without knowing he still cared for her. This heartbreaking aspect of his past provides an interesting idea: we often wonder what kind of couple the pair would be. After all, Mrs. Hughes would be good for Carson and might be the only person who could make him think about himself for once in his life, rather than simply focusing on the family whom he sees it as his most solemn duty to serve regardless of the way his own life might suffer for it. Imagining a Carson who didn't work for the Granthams is almost impossible, as is seeing him as someone who once loved and was loved. Therefore, this small glimpse into his past might pave the way for further interactions in a romantic light: maybe one day Mrs. Hughes will be able to thaw out this gentle giant's heart.
