4. Vast Array Of Humour
One of the dynamics which was delivered so perfectly through the four seasons was the vast array of humour. Eastbound & Down is a comedy show, after all, and the comedic element of the production is delivered in a way which keeps the audience laughing. Catchy one-liners, bizarre catchphrases, surreal character traits and an ever-changing plotline are all aspects of Eastbound & Down which we have come to expect and enjoy. Take for example the character of Ashley Schaeffer, played by Will Ferrell. From his introduction in the first season we've come to see the antagonist of the story as a strange, memorable, but ultimately hilarious character. His very appearance is something to behold long white hair, black sunglasses and white three-piece suit. He owns a car dealership, but the seedy character takes over-the-top to completely unexpected levels. At first we see him as a power-mad weirdo, but his characters surreal depth is revealed fully in a third season scene showing a meal at his plantation. Kenny must rescue Stevie, who has been made a geisha for Schaeffers South Korean guests, and the resulting drama sees them run for their lives across the plantation grounds as Will Ferrells unique ego manically fires a canon at them. The surreal element of Eastbound & Down is visited frequently, but humour also comes in more traditional forms. Kenny Powers deprecated character is subject to our laughter, and his blatant stupidity at times makes for real entertainment. His repeated lack of judgment and hand at creating the most awkward situations are the characters best traits, as notable examples prove his appearance at Shanes funeral, his rivalry with his Russian team-mate, and virtually everything he does in Mexico all show interesting sides to our hero.
