Every Buffy The Vampire Slayer Season Finale Ranked From Worst To Best

5. Restless (Season 4, Episode 22)

Buffy The Gift Sacrifice
Mutant Enemy

Following on directly from the events of 'Primeval', this highly-praised and deeply unnerving episode sees Buffy, Giles, Willow, and Xander suffer the consequences of the Binding Ritual that they used to defeat Adam.

After settling in for a night of movies and popcorn, the gang barely makes it through the first act of Apocalypse Now before falling asleep. What should be a chance to recuperate after a taxing battle soon becomes something far more sinister, as one by one, they're subject to a series of bizarre dreams in which they're stalked Elm Street style by The First Slayer. A malevolent presence that's angry at them for perverting the natural order of things by merging themselves within Buffy's body.

There's an incredible attention to detail within this episode that truly makes the dreams feel like, well, dreams. The unusual camera-work, bizarre sound-scapes and seemingly never-ending non-sequiturs, and shifts in mood make it one of the show's most interesting and rewatchable outings.

It may not be as exciting as other entries on this list, but 'Restless' is bold and surprising in its own unique way, and it cryptically set the stage for several plotlines that would crop up in later seasons.
