Every HBO Comedy Ranked From Worst To Best

17. Silicon Valley

The world of tech geeks seems like low hanging fruit for comedy, and indeed The Big Bang Theory proved that mining gags from socially inept nerds can be an easy and lucrative business indeed. The vastly superior Silicon Valley takes a relatively similar world and proves that, with a little more effort and focus on character, there’s still fun to be had in that setting.

Co-created by comedy genius Mike Judge, Silicon Valley assembles one of the best comedy casts in recent memory: Thomas Middleditch as founder of tech firm Pied Piper, and his crew of collaborators played by Zach Woods, Martin Starr, Kumail Nanjiani, and TJ Miller (who was swiftly yanked from the show after appalling details of his personal life came to light).

Perfectly balancing an engaging plot with a high gag rate and maintaining a comedy style that hits hard without ever dipping into outright nastiness, Silicon Valley kept up its pace admirably for six seasons before bowing out on its own terms after sustained critical and commercial success. A class act of modern comedy.
