11. Insecure

Co-created by Larry Wilmore and lead actress Issa Rae, Insecure is a frank, often explicit, sometimes painfully funny show about the modern struggles of two young black women in L.A. A show with a unique perspective and angle, this is a coming of age story with a difference, in turn hopeful, hilarious, angry, and despairing.

Rae co-stars alongside Yvonne Orji as a charity worker and a corporate lawyer respectively. Two best friends at different stages of their careers, they nonetheless lean on each other as they navigate the rocky world of love and dating, as well as the specific difficulties that come from being black women in contemporary America.

Insecure tells many stories specific to this community, tackling racism on the smallest and largest scales, and Rae weaves narratives with this audience in mind, but many of its stories and characters are universal. It has some of the most realistic depictions of sex and relationships ever seen on TV, with some shocking moments thrown in there.

Its fifth season, currently airing, is to be its last - since its 2016 debut, Insecure hasn’t put a foot wrong, and has provided a vital voice and unforgettable characters.
