Remember Entourage? Well it’s back, in sports form! With the charisma machine Dwayne Johnson (who also co-created the show) in the lead role, it never sinks to the charmless depths of latter day Entourage, but neither does it reach the heights that show was once capable of. It’s consistently predictable, harmless fun that was probably a lot more enjoyable for the cast to make than it is for us to watch.
Johnson plays an ex-NFL star trying to figure out what to do with his professional sports days behind him. Not unlike Johnson himself, he essentially succeeds at everything he tries with the greatest of ease. It’s a comedy first and foremostly, so intricate plotting isn’t necessarily the show’s first priority, but the sheer lack of drama on show here makes Entourage look like a Michael Mann thriller.
The show has a warmth and easygoing appeal that makes it difficult to genuinely dislike, but the whole thing feels empty and a little pointless. As long as Dwayne had a good time, though, that’s the main thing.
