8. Frank Semyon - Season 2

True Detective
HBO

It's okay if you can't take Vince Vaughn seriously; his film history as a funny man was probably why it was a strange casting choice when we learned he was cast to play a crime boss trying to go straight in season two.

But when the trailers debuted and so did the series, the reasons for Vince' casting became clear. He's a giant of a man with a dead-eyed stare that can snap to a warm smile or enraged violence at any point and that is exactly what kind of person Frank needed to be.

What's interesting about Frank Semyon is that he is a soft-spoken, understanding and sometimes passive individual whose resort to violence is often his last one. As a criminal we should have expected him to be the overarching villain, but that isn't the case.

It's the opposite in fact, as Frank becomes integral to dismantling certain parts of the corrupt network that spreads across the second season.

His relationship with Ray Velcoro is not one of boss-employee, but two friends with shady dealings. Frank is empathetic towards Ray, and we get a sense he's not a bad guy. Just a guy who has done a lot of bad things.

I overthink a lot of things. Will talk about pretty much anything for a great length of time. I'm obsessed with General Slocum from the 2002 Spider-Man film. I have questions that were never answered in that entire trilogy!
