Every Season Of American Horror Story - Ranked

Sorry, 1984, but you missed the mark.

Maybe that was because it followed two powerful seasons that explored such big ideas – Cult and Apocalypse. In comparison, 1984 felt small.

This season acted as a love letter to the ‘80s and cheesy, gory slashers. It felt like this theme came first, and the story second. AHS has always hosted a wide variety of characters, and almost as many deaths – but 1984 took it to another level. With almost everyone returning as ghosts, it was hard to keep track of who died, which character killed them, and where their allegiances lay.

However, that wasn’t the worst part of the show.

Serial killers are abundant in American Horror Story – no more so than the fifth season, Hotel (more on that later.) 1984 tried to ride on the success of Hotel, bringing back infamous serial killer, Richard Ramirez, played by a different actor. Alongside him were a bland cast of wannabe-Ted-Bundys that sucked the life out of the show. It was pale in comparison to the exploration of true crime that AHS had done so well before.

If you’re a die-hard ‘80s fan who is dedicated to true crime, this season may be for you. But for those of you less ride-or-die for aerobics and spandex, it’ll be disappointing.

Seeing as it’s the most recent season, we can only hope that the creators learn that it never pays to re-hash old ideas.
