9. The Fight Before Christmas

Simpsons Christmas
Fox

The worst of two segmented style Christmas episodes, this one has a few hits and a few misses, so that feels like a comfortable place to fall.

While it’s definitely not perfect, they deserve a little bit of praise for Katy Perry’s guest spot. Squeezing in celebrities is one of the issues with post-Golden Era episodes, but if anything, Martha Stewart’s uninspired cameo earlier in the episode is better evidence of the decline.

Referencing her banned Sesame Street appearance, Perry features in red, skin-tight vinyl, donning the Simpson family faces. Nothing in that segment is hilarious, but at least fans get to see their favourite characters ‘Sesamed’. You want the Christmas special to be memorable, and The Fight Before Christmas certainly delivers that.

Two of the other segments are trying something new as well. Similar to Family Guy’s Road To The North Pole, Bart visits Santa to complain about presents. Both episodes debuted in 2010 too, so there’s no story stealing here.

Finally, we see Marge in WWI during Christmas. It’s obviously not canon, but it’s great to see Marge out of her comfort zone. Overall, it’s a good episode that’s just too light on the laughs to be great.
