27. Pon Farr In Why Must I Be A Crustacean In Love
The episodeWhy Must I be A Crustacean in Love follows Zoidberg going to his home planet during mating season to find a woman to mate with. The males who are seeking a mate on his planet often fight to the death for a female.
This episode parallels the episode Amok Time, in which Spock must travel back to Vulcan because he is experiencing Pon Farr. Pon Farr, which is parodied by the condition that Zoidberg is experiencing, is a time in which Vulcan's enter heat and must mate, or they will die. In Star Trek, this condition occurs within Vulcans every 7 years. Zoidberg enters this state in the episode and fights with Fry in the episode while trying to mate.
A second minor reference occurs in the episode. When Fry and Zoidberg fight, the anthem of Zoidberg's planet is played. This anthem is simply the fight music from The Original Series.
These references to The Original Series and Pon Farr are funny and are ones that are easily recognizable. Pon Farr has entered into nerd knowledge and remains one of the memories a lot have of The Original Series of Star Trek.
