Every Star Trek: Voyager Season Ranked From Worst To Best

6. Season 2

Tom Paris Death Star Trek Voyager
CBS

Voyager began to get better during this season, but still missed the mark many times. Initiations, Non Sequitur, Twisted, Tattoo and the infamous Threshold all lower the quality of this season, which is a shame, because there are some excellent episodes to be found. Projections, Meld, Death Wish, Lifesigns, Deadlock and Basics Part 1 are all excellent entries into the Voyager series.

Death Wish is cited by Kate Mulgrew as her favourite Voyager episode because of the way it made Janeway rethink her view on suicide. It gets viewers thinking as well as providing the return of Q, bringing a little silliness to an otherwise serious storyline.

Deadlock and Basics provide wonderful tension for the viewers, as the future of the crew is put into jeopardy and their survival is uncertain. The tension in these episodes is edge-of-seat stuff and the storylines illustrate how much stronger the crew are when they band together.

Projections provided the return of Lieutenant Reginald Barclay while giving the Doctor and the audience a mind-boggling situation sure to get them thinking. The complexity of this episode and its layered story make it one of the season's best.

Lifesigns also provides an excellent storyline for the Doctor as he falls in love with a Vidiian doctor affected by the phage. It shows a different side to the Doctor and allows the audience to see him grow in his social relationships while providing an interesting storyline.

Meld provides an excellent commentary on criminal behaviour and its consequences. The debate between Janeway and Tuvok about whether to rehabilitate, imprison or execute Suder after he kills another crew member gets viewers thinking. Adding to this is the fact Suder had no reason to kill his victim, which creates another layer to the complexity of the story, with this episode executing it brilliantly.

In contrast, this season’s bad episodes were BAD. Threshold is Voyager's most infamous episode, but Non Sequitur and Tattoo were also flops with viewers. Sending Harry Kim back to San Francisco in Non Sequitur and altering the timeline so that he was not on Voyager while having him trying to get back is a storyline that did not sit well. Tattoo provides an ill-executed attempt to give Chakotay's background a storyline while in the Delta Quadrant. Like Non Sequitur, it's an episode that didn't work well for viewers. Initiations and Twisted also fell prey to terrible writing and were not liked by audiences.

So despite the brilliant episodes, the inconsistency in this season relegates it to this entry on the list.
