Cleveland Brown is showcased as the voice of reason amongst his friends, depicted in the early seasons as being the voice in Peter's ear that would try and sway him away from certain actions. Cleveland's specific tone of voice has become synonymous with the character, as he speaks really slow (leading to many of his gags).

He is also one of the only recurring African-American characters on the show and has been involved in numerous storylines involving racism. His easy going personality made him the perfect character for a spin-off, leading to the creation of the Cleveland Show.

Despite the Cleveland Show never reaching the heights of Family Guy, Cleveland continues to be one of the best characters outside of the Griffin family in the series.
