After finishing up work on his best-selling novel Before the Fall, and creating the first season of critically acclaimed X-Men show Legion, Noah Hawley has been back to work in Alberta, Canada, where previous seasons of Fargo were also shot. Principal photography for season three also took place in and around Alberta, not in Minnesota where the show is actually set.

A behind the scenes piece in GQ follows Noah Hawley around a small town called Beiseker, which will serve as the central location for the events of the season. The cold weather and presence of snow in Calgary seems to be of great importance to the Fargo showrunner's creative process:

"It's a winter show, for better or worse, and this winter, there is not time to shoot another year before this winter is over. It's also very important to me and my other producers, I think one of the strengths of the show is that we separate the writing from the production and we really take our time and we break the whole story and we write eight of the 10 hours at least and we end up up there knowing exactly what we're doing, exactly what the whole story is."
