Fear The Walking Dead - 8 Talking Points From The Premiere
8. The Opening Sequence
Much like the comic and the "main" series, Fear The Walking Dead once again borrows from 28 Days Later with the harrowing opening sequence which takes place in a dilapidated church. We're introduced to Nick Clark - played by Frank Dillane - who is obviously battling a severe addiction while he's holed up in the rundown place of worship. When he awakes from his drug-induced stupor, he begins searching the church for his companion Gloria, but ends up finding a mutilated corpse instead. When Nick does locate Gloria, she's no longer living but is now a flesh-starved walker. He flees the church on foot and runs into the street, before being hit by a motorist on a scooter. At this point we pull back and see many still-breathing people rushing to his aid, which immediately lets us know that we're days, if not months away from the apocalyptic trigger event of The Walking Dead. A real highlight of the opening moments of the show was the score. The pulsating sounds - reminiscent of the blaring horns from the 2005 version of War Of The Worlds - instilled a sense of dread and urgency to the proceedings that really set the tone for the rest of the episode. If this first instalment is any indication, the soundtrack may turn out to be a real highlight.
