An apt summary of this entire episode would be to compare it to the titular walking dead in terms of pacing. Everything was slow and plodding, and the usual lengthy commercial breaks that AMC tosses in for their top series just added to the drawn out feeling for those watching live. In addition to that, the heavy-handed attempts at the zombie/addict allegory were a bit amateurish and obvious. For a near-90 minute episode, we were basically only given two brief moments of intensity with the opening and closing sequences, and everything in between alternated between filler and the establishing of the principal characters. To compare it to The Walking Dead may be slightly unfair since the original series began well after the apocalypse had already unfolded, but the connection is inescapable and the contrast is quite staggering. The expectations for this show are through the roof, and we may yet have some thrilling and captivating television in store, but "Pilot" felt like anything but that, and perhaps most importantly it comes across as a desperate and forced attempt to tell a story that very few were asking be told.
