The Flash: 19 Easter Eggs And References You Have To See

19. Familiar Names...

You couldn't swing a dead cat without hitting some reference to a familiar name from The Flash comic books in this pilot. Not that you should be swinging dead cats around, even if you are really excited about a new superhero TV show. That's pretty anti-social behaviour. In this opening hour alone the show managed to make call outs to some established entities from the comics and possibly set up some future superheroic appearances, all just through the strategic naming of businesses around Central City. For one, the Big Belly Burger Barry lunches at has appeared in Arrow, but it has a wider significance in the source material - it's a fast food franchise owned by Superman's nemesis, Lex Luthor. There's also the coffee shop Jitters, where Barry's love interest Iris works, which featured heavily in the recently relaunched Flash comic book. Another nod to the lore is Gambi Cleaners, the van full of pillows the suddenly speedy Allen crashes into: Paul Gambi is a tailor who made the costumes for most of the hero's rogues gallery. Oh and then there's the Ferris Air Testing Facility the STAR Labs gang go to test our hero's speed, named for one Carol Ferris - the sometime squeeze of former pilot, current Green Lantern Hal Jordan, last seen in the mostly terrible Ryan Reynolds movie of the same name. About time he got a reboot.
