The Flash: 5 Reasons Why The Pilot Promises Great Things

5. Not Just For Comic Lovers

As far as superheroes go, the Flash is one with which most people are at least vaguely familiar. They may not know his secret identity or how he got his powers, but the man in a red suit with yellow lightning bolts who can run really fast is one of the more famous DC heroes not named Batman or Superman. Conversely, while the Flash as a character has existed for more than 70 years and has accumulated quite a mythology along the way, too much too fast could turn off viewers who have never picked up a comic book in their lives. Without the convenience of an origin story already universally known such as Superman€™s fall to Earth or Bruce Wayne€™s childhood tragedies, there had to be enough substance to the Flash€™s story to intrigue and excite without inundating. Now, as one of those viewers who has never picked up a comic book and who only knew the Flash as the man in the red suit, this writer can attest to the fact that the fact that the pilot managed to balance backstory with plot to just about perfection. While there were certainly Easter eggs aplenty that have existing fans going wild all over the internet, none were so obtrusive as to make new viewers feel any sense of puzzlement or inadequacy for their lack of knowledge of Flash lore.

Fiction buff and writer. If it's on Netflix, it's probably in my queue. I've bought DVDs for the special features and usually claim that the book is better than the movie or show (and can provide examples). I've never met a TV show that I won't marathon. Follow on Twitter @lah9891 .
