2. The One With The Fertility Test (S9, Ep 21)
This one was a real shocker and another example of the real-live curveballs Friends could sometimes throw at us.
The ending alone could put this entry on the list, but let's backtrack a little bit. After trying for a baby for a while with no luck, both Monica and Chandler decide to get themselves checked out at a fertility clinic. We are of course led to believe that everything will be okay due to the general humour of the show, including some Chandler-centric reactions to putting sperm in a cup and a genuinely heartfelt cameo from Janice, but as we now know, it was all a deception before THAT phone call.
After Chandler picks the phone up to the clinic, it's revealed that both of the pair actually have a problem, making it very unlikely they could ever conceive naturally. It's a shocking and heart-breaking moment to see the pair's reaction.
Even Chandler's attempts at humour as a defence mechanism fail, and we are helpless to do anything but watch as the couple hold each other, devastated at the shocking news.
