6. The One Where They're Going To Party (Season 4 Episode 9)

Friends Joey
NBC

In this episode, Rachel and Phoebe are at a cross roads with their jobs. Rachel's job prospects are dealt a horrifying blow as her boss, Joana, sabotages her application at another Bloomingdale's store. Whilst Phoebe's idea of starting her own catering business with Monica reaches a dead end when Monica is offered a job as head chef at Alessandro's. The boys, meanwhile are ditched by their friend Mike "Gandalf" Ganderson and try to decide whether or not to go and party anyway.

What sucks: As great as Monica's promotion is, it's a shame the writer's didn't pursue the idea of Phoebe and Monica working together. We get a small, yet hilarious glimpse of how the overly organised Monica and the chaotically charming Phoebe would work together but the idea is binned off far too quickly. Also, this episode tries desperately to show Ross as a bit of a party animal but has spent the last four seasons painting him as a social reject when he was growing up.

What didn't suck: The interaction when Joey asks Chandler why he had a friend called Gandalf.

Chandler: Didn't you read Lord Of The Rings in high school?

Joey: No. I had sex in high school.

I see my role at WhatCulture the same way my wife sees my role as a lover: I contribute in a very small way, my presence is barely noticeable and I’m not entirely sure if the laughter is at me or with me.
