Futurama: 10 Worst Episodes

6. A Leela Of Her Own

The Episode: In one of the last episodes of Season 4, Leela manages to become the first female professional blernsball player despite her lack of any skill in the sport. In fact, her lack of depth perception makes her a terrible player. However, her inability to pitch without knocking the batters unconscious turns out to be a huge crowd-pleaser. Leela basically becomes the first professional female player in the sport because she€™s a source of cheap entertainment. After being accused of holding women back in the sport, however, Leela enlists the help of Hank Aaron XXIV, the former worst player in history, only to end up taking his place in the Blernsball Hall of Fame.

Why It Sucks: This was one of the least popular episodes in the history of the show among fans. Most viewers agree that the treatment of the "immigrant" aliens and the female characters was heavy-handed to say the least, reducing most of the characters to one-dimensional representations of xenophobia and sexism.

The episode's unpopularity has also been blamed on the general lack of one-liners and the downbeat ending. The jokes that did make it through were almost entirely focused on baseball and American football, and so only sports fans found them even remotely funny. As a result, the baseball-centric plot also failed to entertain pretty much anyone who isn't American.

With a (nearly) useless degree in English literature and a personal trainer qualification he's never used, Freddie spends his times writing things that he hopes will somehow pay the rent. He's also a former professional singer, and plays the saxophone and ukulele. He's not really used to talking about himself in the third person, and would like to stop now, thanks.
