Nibbler has kind of been part of the crew since episode four, the same one Zapp Brannigan made his debut in. However, it’s not until he speaks where he really comes into his own.

He can still be involved before that, like when Nibbler is flushed down the toilet by Bender in I Second That Emotion. There’s also his infamous appearance in the pilot as a shadow, although some fans debate whether he was actually in the original broadcast or only added for reruns once his backstory had been established.

Season 3’s The Day The Earth Stood Stupid features his first ‘true’ appearance, although that and follow up The Why Of Fry both see him wiping Leela and Fry’s memory respectively.

The first movie Bender’s Big Score, though, sees him talking to the whole crew, establishing him as a main member from this point forward. It’s a great contrast from his usual cutesy persona to the commanding gravitas he has while speaking, and with his very intelligent, philosophical nature he’s a unique member of the crew as well.

Still, it’s strange that aside from Leela & Fry’s first experience, no one is particularly shocked he can speak.
