Game Of Thrones: 10 Greatest Warriors In The History Of Westeros

6. Robert Baratheon

Game of Thrones King Robert
HBO
"The peerless Robert Baratheon, demon of the Trident, the fiercest warrior of the realm, a giant among princes."

The second half of the quote above, which comes from Jon Snow, goes: "...Jon saw only a fat man, red-faced under his beard, sweating through his silks. He walked like a man half in his cups."

That is the picture we're given of Robert Baratheon in the present, a man who has let himself go and cares only for drinking and hosting tourneys. But while Robert was a bad husband and a terrible king, he was in his prime one of the greatest and most fierce warriors Westeros has ever seen.

A young Robert was "muscled like a maiden's fantasy", and as strong and fearless as a bull in battle. After Rhaegar Targaryen's kidnap of Lyanna he launched what became known as Robert's Rebellion, and he himself fought in many of the battles and earned a number of victories. He slew Marq Grafton at Gulltown, fought and defeated three different Lords at Summerhall, almost killed Jon Connington (who was personally sent by Aerys to find and defeat Robert.

This all led to the Battle of the Trident, where he fought with Rhaegar Targaryen (himself a truly skilled warrior) in single combat in what was a gruelling battle, eventually killing him with a blow from his mighty warhammer. Kingship may have changed him, but the Robert who led that rebellion was almost unstoppable.
