2. Catelyn Stark
Some of you might be shocked that Im sticking Catelyn Stark ahead of her son in the shocking death stakes, but I hope to explain why this is the case. First of all, we knew that something was off throughout the Red Wedding before it actually went Red, and if something were to happen it would probably end up happening to Robb. After all, hes the actual oath-breaker, and the most likely source of Walder Freys ire. Yet I dont think we all counted on just how brutal Walder Frey would be. The bloke massacred everyone but the Tully men, decimating Robbs army, his wife and even his mother. That in itself marks it out the death as something altogether shocking, but the manner of Catelyns death made it infinitely more brutal. It was just grim, a throat-slashing done without fuss, music or drama. She was there one moment and then she wasnt, as her executioner sealed her fate in the most shocking way possible before just walking off, with it all captured on camera in unflinching detail. It was an excellent way to end the episode a traumatic coup de grace after weve scaled a mountain of shock, and thats why it belongs so high up this list.
