Game Of Thrones: 12 Ups And 4 Downs From Season 6

2. Tyrion Was Mostly Wasted

If you were to do a survey of Game of Thrones fans, asking who their favourite character was, I'd be willing to bet good money the most common response would be Tyrion Lannister.

Since the start of the show Tyrion has established himself not just as an important figure, but a firm fan-favourite. He's heroic enough to be likeable, but with enough shades of grey to remain really interesting, and is one of the smartest and wittiest characters on the show, frequently delivering the best lines, with impeccable acting from Peter Dinklage. No matter where you put Tyrion, or who he's with, he'll be good value; Dinklage as Tyrion could produce a charismatic scene acting alongside a paper bag.

That's why it was such a shame to see him go to waste in Meereen this year. The meeting of Daenerys and Tyrion was huge, bringing together two of the series' main characters, but since then they've mostly been kept apart. While Khaleesi was flying dragons and burning khals, Tyrion was left to try and crack jokes with Grey Worm and Missandei, wander aimlessly with Varys, and end up looking like a bit of an idiot when his deal with the Masters backfired.

Tyrion is, and always has been, a character central to the show, whose presence was keenly felt. It's an indictment of how much he was wasted that he didn't appear for two consecutive episodes this year, and wasn't really missed. Thankfully the series revived this towards the end, with the touching scene of him being made Hand of the Queen, but it really needs to build on that next year.
