Game Of Thrones: 15 Unforgettable Scenes From Season 7
12. Greyscale Surgery
There have been a lot of strange and disturbing sights this season, but none were as hard to watch as Sam Tarly's attempt to cure Jorah Mormont of Greyscale.
It's the greatest challenge both these characters have had to face: Jorah is used to enemies he can fight, but here he needs to rely on quiet resilience, while Sam needs to actually apply some of his knowledge to a potentially lethal operation. It's climactic without any fanfare.
Before the nail biting intensity of the scene starts, we get to see Jorah finally connect with one of the Night's Watch brothers who served his father, establishing the connection between these two men (and later between Jorah & Jon).
This scene features some of Iain Glenn's finest acting in the show as Jorah struggles to keep from screaming in agony while Sam cuts away at his flesh. The makeup is like something out of a horror film, and just as the audience is starting to squirm, this scene ends with one of the best transition edits in the series.
