Game Of Thrones: 18 Terrible Ideas That Were Great To Watch
5. Chopping Off Jaime's Hand
Jaime Lannister is a divisive character, and most people seem to either love him or hate him. Personally, I love him. He's so dysfunctional. Legitimately in love with his own sister, everything that Jaime does is for his family. Pushing Bran out of the window was neither wise nor commendable, but he did it to protect Cersei and his children. Also, himself. He's not a good guy, but he is sure as hell fun to watch. Ridiculously handsome and known as the greatest living swordsman in all of the Seven Kingdoms, Jaime is nevertheless captured first by Robb Stark, then sent by Catelyn under the protection of Brienne of Tarth to be exchanged for the Stark girls, then captured again by Roose Bolton's men. Surprisingly, it is one of Jaime's few altruistic acts that costs him his greatest asset - when Brienne is dragged off to be brutally raped, Jaime insists that she has an important father who will pay a handsome ransom for her return, so long as she is untouched. Unfortunately, Jaime then pushes his luck a little bit too far in trying to bargain for his own release, and Locke - the leader of the band of men who captured them - decides that he needs to teach Jaime a lesson. In what is the cruelest punishment that anyone could have devised for the Kingslayer, Locke chops off Jaime's sword hand with a dirty knife. Now, depending on your opinion of Jaime Lannister, this may have been a "Hell yeah!" moment. If you were Locke, however, it should have been an "Oh, crap, what have I done and how do I reattach this thing?!" sort of moment. As much as Jaime may have been begging for a maiming from his first appearance in the series, removing a very important limb from the son of the wealthiest and most powerful man in Westeros was not a very good idea. A punch in the face or kick to the crotch, sure. Slicing off the sword hand? Not so much.
