Game Of Thrones: 20 Most Shocking Moments Ever

9. For The Watch

Jon Snow Death
HBO

First, Ned was the main hero, and he was killed. Then Robb was the main hero, and so too, he was killed. So when it became fully apparent that Jon Snow was the main hero, then we should've known that soon enough, he'd be killed as well.

Except we didn't Because you can't just keep on changing the protagonist *that* often. There needs to be some semblance of a hero's journey, and Jon's was the most clear and obvious across the whole show. He was the bastard, who was secretly the rightful King. The product of doomed love. Although that was unconfirmed at the time, it wasn't exactly a secret either to fans of the show, which meant he was destined to make it to the very end.

Of course, like so many of these, book readers knew it was coming, but the majority of viewers had no idea quite what awaited Jon when he went running to news of his uncle Benjen. As the mutineers line up to kill him - et tu, Olly? - and deliver the line "for the watch", each stabbing is like a dagger to our own hearts, and we can only watch in disbelief - even with a vague knowing he'll somehow return - that it's happened again.
