18. Sansa’s Wedding Night

Game of Thrones had shown rape before. It’d even shown it with main characters we cared about. But it’d never done it quite like in Season 5, in the wedding night of Sansa Stark and Ramsay Bolton.

It’s a little tricky to pinpoint exactly what makes this so shocking, because there are a few factors at play. There is, of course, the horrific act itself. There’s the matter that we’ve already seen Sansa forced into marriage, and countless other terrors besides over the years. That this was a character we’d watched develop from a young girl, and was just starting to learn how to play the game. That Ramsay took such despicable delight in the act. Or that it cut away to focus on the horrified reaction of Theon.

It’s repulsive, very difficult to watch, and remains one of the show’s lowest points.
