Game Of Thrones: 25 Key Details You Need To Know & Remember For Season 8
18. Gendry Is Back
After a four-year absence where he was 'still rowing' - or in truth, working as a smith in Flea Bottom - Gendry returned in Season 7, brought back into the fold by Davos, but to what end?
Gendry said he was ready to join the fight, and headed beyond the Wall to help capture a wight, before having to run back to Eastwatch to send a raven to Daenerys for help. He hasn't been seen since, but he will be back in Season 8.
That will involve him making weapons and reuniting with Arya, but what's his true purpose? You don't leave a plot thread like that hanging for so long and revive it just to have him do a bit of smithing, especially not when the character in question is the bastard son of King Robert Baratheon. That means Gendry does, potentially, have a claim to the Iron Throne, which could come into play towards the end.
Or maybe it really is just for the smithing, but on a much bigger level, with Gendry - assisted by Sam - discovering the secret to making Valyrian steel, something that has been lost for centuries. Gendry's old master, Tobho Mott, knew how to rework the metal, while Sam read a book that discussed Valyrian steel and dragonglass at the Citadel. Add in the presence of dragons, and perhaps Valyrian steel could be forged once more.
