With so much material and so many characters, the danger of any particular arc being weighed down by a deluge of expositional monologues is always present. Game of Thrones is generally able to avoid the pitfall by writing phenomenally compelling monologues for its cast of exceptionally talented performers, but even the greatest episodes at times are forced to sacrifice progress on one big plot for the sake of another.

Not so in “The Wars To Come.” While Brienne may have spent her screentime snapping at Podrick and the highlight of the Sansa/Littlefinger sequence may have been little Lord Arryn being pummeled in the background, the advancement on the major fronts of the universe was fantastic. Things are happening, progress is being made, and characters heretofore unknown to one another are coming together. It was a heart-racing hour of television, and that the fifth season successfully hit the ground running promises great things for the next nine episodes.
