In the summer of 2011, fans who'd started watching a HBO fantasy series called Game of Thrones were absolutely losing their sh*t: Ned Stark, the series' main protagonist, played by the most recognisable face in the cast, had been killed off.

Also in the summer of 2011, fans of George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire books were absolutely losing their sh*t: Jon Snow, one of the series' main protagonists, a guy the title refers to, had been killed off.

Fast forward a few years and the show has not only reached that development, but resolved it. Fans of the books have spent years theorising over how Jon would come back, with one of the most likely always that it would be Melisandre who resurrects him, and that's exactly what happened on the TV show during Season 6.

Given Jon almost certainly won't be staying dead in the books either, it seems a safe bet that we'll be reading this happen whenever The Winds of Winter is published.

That being said, it's likely Jon will be staying dead longer in the books than he did on the show. The TV series hasn't explored his ability to warg, while in the books it's suggested that he warged into Ghost as his body was stabbed by the mutineers. We should be spending some time with Jon as Ghost in the books, before Mel brings him back to life.
