9. The Hound

How He First Appears With a nickname like The Hound, you'd be forgiven for making a snap decision regarding the values and defining characteristics of Sandor Clegane. It doesn't help that his brother is The Mountain either; surely no man related to such a murderous giant could have any redeeming qualities. Listen to The Hound talk and your preconceptions are reconfirmed - this is a man who expresses regret for not raping enough women before he killed them. And yet, bubbling underneath all this is the suspicion of a better person. In Season 1 he saves Ser Loras from his brother, then reveals how he was tortured by his brother as a child - explaining some of his behaviour patterns. At first, his reasons appear self-serving; he intends to take her to her mother and earn ransom money for his efforts, but as the two spend more time together, he responds to her single-mindedness.
