Game Of Thrones: Every Episode Ranked From Worst To Best

48. Stormborn (S7E2)

Game of Thrones Euron
HBO

Written By: Bryan Cogman Directed By: Mark Mylod

The second episode of Season 7 largely keeps to the tried-and-tested formula with more table-setting, before exploding into life right at the very end.

The first big action sequence of the year is a success, even if a little hard to follow at times due to the nighttime setting. This is where Euron really shows us what he's capable of, and Theon reverts back to being Reek in heartwrenching fashion.

Elsewhere Daenerys and Varys have a terrifically tense face-off, Arya is reunited with both Hot PIe and Nymeria in quick succession (to mixed results), Missandei and Grey Worm have a sweet love scene, and in curing Jorah of greyscale we get possibly the most disgusting cut in TV history. It's all largely solid, but it's all a bit wheel-spinning too.

47. The Last Of The Starks (S8E4)

Game of Thrones Last Of The Starks
HBO

Written By: David Benioff & D.B. Weiss Directed By: David Nutter

The Last of the Starks is doomed to be remembered as The One With The Coffee Cup, with the piece of cardboard sat in front of Daenerys dominating the post-episode discussion.

It was used a stick (or rather, cup) with which to beat Season 8 as a whole, and looking at The Last of the Starks again there are some of the issues with pacing and logic that started to become problematic in Season 7: how Dany doesn't spot the Iron Fleet, or how Euron gets his hands on Missandei, for example, stand out.

And yet it's not as bad as much of that would suggest: the first half-hour or so at Winterfell is filled with great, funny character work, there's a genuine shock factor, real emotion courtesy of Jaime and Brienne, and the final moments are brutal, yet promise a thrilling denouement to come.
