Season 4’s penultimate episode is often unfavorably compared to Season 2’s Blackwater, and not without good reason. Like that episode, it’s a battle-centric episode, set entirely at one location, and Neil Marshall is once again in the director’s chair. But it doesn’t have the same spark that made Blackwater so special though, as the conflict between the Night’s Watch and the Wildlings this season wasn’t as fully built up as Stannis’s claim for the Iron Throne, so it didn't match that payoff.

That being said, it’s still an incredible hour of television: an hour of non-stop action, set pieces, giants and mammoths attacking the gates, giant arrows flying bodies to the other side of the castle, a 360 degree long shot showing all the mayhem…there’s a lot to take in, and it’s amazing!

But the best moment is undoubtedly the final scene between Jon and Ygritte. It starts off in suspense, making you wonder if Ygritte will put an arrow through Jon’s heart…until Olly shoots one into her own. The final words between the two, reminiscing about that time they spent in the cave where they fell in love, and Ygritte’s final uttering of her iconic line “You know nothing, Jon Snow” will bring a grown man to tears.
