The game of thrones has been won. The kings have clashed, the swords have stormed; the crows have feasted and the dragons have danced. The winds of winter have blown in, and now, after eight years, eight seasons, and 73 episodes, we have a dream of spring.

The series finale has a lot of ground to cover: it has to deal with the fallout from Daenerys' dark turn in The Bells, and reckon with the decision she made to kill so many innocent people. It then has to go on to tie up the arcs of every major character left standing, which is a Wun-Wun-sized task in and of itself.

Written and directed by David Benioff & D.B. Weiss (marking just the third time the showrunners have helmed an episode), the finale manages to craft a satisfying conclusion to the story as a whole and finds room for intimate character send-offs too. Daenerys dies, as she really had to after last week, but the last of the Starks all survive, as does Tyrion, and it's on them to conclude this journey.

It wraps up a lot of things very neatly, but it still manages to leave plenty of questions in its wake as well.
