It may sound like something taken from Greek mythology or ripped from the pages of a comic book, but instead the Age of Heroes (or at least, the Age of Heroes we're here to talk about, and not the one that's actually of Greek mythology or in the pages of a comic book) belongs to the World of Ice and Fire.

George R.R. Martin has created a fictional history that few can rival, with a universe that stretches back some 12,000 years. For reference, recorded civilisation in the real world only goes back 5,000 years.

And so we come to the Age of Heroes, which takes place just over 10,000 years ago in GRRM's world. This, then, is the setting for the HBO's Game of Thrones spin-off.

A time of peace and prosperity in a Westeros unrecognisable from the one seen on the TV series, the new show - which comes from Jane Goldman and Martin - will follow this golden period into its horrific, White Walker-inflicted descent. Details are scarce at this stage, but even now we can start looking ahead at the things it needs to include in order to make this new age for Game of Thrones something truly heroic.
